April 3, 2011 President’s Brief
Well gentlemen, another year of hockey is nearly under our belts. With the finish of the regular season, we now move to the round robin games with our golf games starting on April 18th. For our new players, this is your chance to play in the BIG game that is televised, but believe me once you see the game on TV you won’t believe how the camera slows our games down…..
Round Robin Action
Horse Race - The annual Horse Race is a great way for your team to win some money towards your team party. Each division collects two dollars per player and those proceeds become the prize for the Horse Race, with each division having one winning team. Winners are determined by the overall plus-minus score by team color across all divisions with +2 points being awarded for each goal scored, and -1 for each goal against. (The championship game does not count in the horse race.) Check the web for which color is winning, as it will be updated by division after every game.
Venue Change - As you are aware we needed to make a venue change for our Championship day as Central arena will be closed for repairs and upgrading. All Games will be played at Appleby 1 Ice pad and we have rented the boardroom located in the front of Appleby 2 Ice pad, where we will be making the championship winner and runner up presentations, and of course serving your favourite cold beverage.
Off Ice Action – Volunteering – Board of Directors
As I have stressed in other communications the strength of our club lies in the quality of our volunteers. Many thanks to all of you who have volunteered your valuable time, and if you are interested in volunteering for one of our committees, or roles of Captain, Convenor let any of the BOD’s know and we will “Hock you up”!
On an annual basis a minimum of 4 new directors are elected to the board for a 2-year term. Directors with their term expiring are required to be elected for another 2 year term to maintain their position on the BOD. I am one of the directors whose term is expiring and I will not be running for another term. Effectively, this completes 4 years (2 terms) as President and I will move to immediate Past President replacing Frank McKeown who currently holds this role. Your next President will be elected from the incoming/current Board of Directors after our AGM. So if you are interested in filling one of the director roles, we ask you to contact Frank McKeown, chair of our nominating committee to get your name on the ballot, with elections being held at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 30, 2011.
Community
We are pleased to report that your charitable support of our Invitational tourney, Ham & Turkey Roll, and your monthly contributions of food items and cash to BOWSER were extremely successful and allow us to make a substantial donation to the Carpenter Hospice and Partnership West Food Bank. Special thank you to all of the teams who stepped up and won our “Ticket Sales Challenge,” and will be enjoying their reward of a “Special Pub Night” for their efforts! Awesome work guys!
2011/12 Membership Signup
You would have already received the email identifying our costs for next year and the key dates. We are pleased to be able to offer credit card payments this year. Signup will be at Hectors on Sat. April 9th and 16th, 10a.m. – 4p.m. (You must register in person for use of the Credit card option.)
As a final note, we all want to win, but please remember it’s about fun and fellowship - play the way you would want someone else to play against you, and as always striving for “Balance, Fair Play and Community”.
Cheers!
