Dear Friends,
Our season is well under way as we enter the New Year. The renovations at Mainway arena and the removal of Skyway from our ice package have greatly improved the quality of ice and the enjoyment of our game. The new ice package has reduced our eleven o clock games by 50%, and has added two more hours on Saturday afternoon. As recommended by our league convenors, the schedule has been revised from January 2nd forward to optimize the grouping of divisional games by night and arena. Moving forward, we will continue to automate the scheduling process and are currently involved with the city in a project to streamline booking reports and permits.
Based on a survey of the surrounding municipalities, the city will not increase the rates for adult ice users in 2012.
Bowser
Our Bowser events have collected 1226 food items and $5,750.53 in cash to date. Thanks to the Bowser Babes for hosting these events and to our members for their generous support of Burlington’s food bank (Partnership West).
Ham and Turkey
The Ham and Turkey roll was well attended again this year. This event provides money for the league and is also a generous supporter of the carpenter hospice. Thanks to Dave Missons and his group of volunteers for all the work and planning that goes into the Ham and Turkey.
Summer Hockey
The expansion of summer hockey to ten teams was a great success. New Jerseys were purchased for the 2011 season for summer use only. The contribution from summer hockey was $6,585.00, which was $1043.00 over the forecasted budget of $5,542.00.
Summer hockey donated $2,000.00 to the Partnership West Food Bank during a season ending BOWSER event. Special thanks to Peter Austin and his group for there dedication to summer hockey and the community.
Burlington Invitational Hockey tournament
The Invitational tournament is a major contributor to the league and also the carpenter hospice. Rick Fox and his team have announced that the Invitational is sold out and we are off to a great start. The draw tickets are a very important to the success of the event and our ability to contribute to the Carpenter Hospice. Let’s do our part to make this year’s event a success by supporting ticket sales and by volunteering for assignments during tournament week.
Balance, Fair Play and Community
As our Convenors and Captains work hard at balancing the divisions and teams, our endless network of volunteers provide services to the game and to the community. As players, it is our responsibility to play safe and remember that “winning is secondary”.
All the best in towards a healthy and happy 2012.
