February Update

Posted February 23 2009 by Red Convenor

With only about 10 games left before playoffs, its still a horserace for first place with the rock steady White Snowflakes, smooth skating Les Red Pylons and the handsome & highly skilled St. Pats all within a couple points of each other. The Blue Line Knitting Club, Teal Autumn Leafs and Black Snack Attack have a race of their own going on as they are all within a few points of each other, as well. The scoring race is also heating up as Greg Faucher is into one of his patented late season hot streaks and has managed to tie The Wiz at 45 points with Paul Hnatiuk right behind at 44.
At the recent board meeting two of the many things discussed were the increase in verbal negativity towards our referees and the increase in penalties involving improper use of the stick. Lets address the stick issue first. The hockey stick has three main functions; to shoot the puck into the net, to pass to your team-mate and to hold you upright. All of us use these three functions in different order but rest assured it should never be used as a tool to trip, knock down or impede an opponents progress at any time. Improper use of the stick often brings us to the other issue; verbal negativity towards officials. Normally, the improper use of a stick is immediately followed by a whistle as the offender is asked to take a time-out in the penalty box and reconsider his actions. Please do not take this opportunity to verbally berate the official. You should be thanking him as he attempts to show you the error of your ways and set you on a future path of humility and respect for your fellow man. Let me put it this way; Go into the box and shut up!!!!
One of the other convenors referred to this time of year as the silly season and suggested that everyone be reminded that the BOHC is about fun and friendship with winning a secondary by-product of playing the game. There is no need to crank it up for the playoff run as all teams qualify for playoffs.
Finally, there were some vehicles broken into recently at Appleby arena. Please leave your valuables at home or take them with you to the bench during your games. The city does what it can to provide us with a safe environment but we should all assume responsibility for our own property.
Looking forward to an exciting finish on what has been a great season.
