FELLOW ORANGE DIVISION PLAYERS
The Championship Orange Division Final featured the Red Light District vs Teal Real Deals on Sunday afternoon. And what an entertaining game it was with Red taking the early 1-0 lead, then Teal stormed back with 2 goals, and Red tied it at 2-2 midway through the second period. It remained that way until the end of regulation which of course forced overtime, and featured our new ” 3 on 3” format, for a 5 minute sudden death period. Approx 2 minutes into overtime a streaking Andy Grougrou for Red flew down the boards and fired a pass across to an open Buddy Fugard who buried the biscuit passed a sprawling Eddie Babuska for the victory. A very entertaining final as either team could have won with both Eddie and Jamie Spence made numerous outstanding saves. The MVP for the game was #4 Red, Jeff Baker as he had scored both of the goals for the Red Light District. Over-all the game did not have much silly stuff and both teams are to be commended for sticking to Hockey, and I thank-you for that. Congratulations to the RED LIGHT DISTRICT
The broadcast times for Cogeco have not yet been established, but when they are available, they will be posted on the web-site. My thanks to Frank McKeown for jumping into the “Color Commentary” role, and was very entertaining. The game is worth a look, just to hear Franks thoughts on the game as it progressed.
Prior to the game, the first annual FRED GUISTINI MEMORIAL AWARD was presented to the Orange Division Old-timer Of The Year, which was awarded to GORD HAMILTON, # 16 TEAL. Gord, has, over the years, displayed exactly what the award is all about, with his sportsmanship, respect for fellow competitors, and genuine love of the game, while at the same time keeping everything in perspective having a laugh or two along the way. Congratulations Gord!
My thanks to Linda Guistini, for coming out to assist in the presentation of this award, and was supported by approximately 10 additional family members that wanted to attend.
A belated congratulations to the BLUE BOMBERS for winning the division on the final day of the year.
Our Round Robin this year was a very exciting one, however we did lose 4 players along the way with season ending ( self induced ) injuries. I would like to wish a speedy recovery to #16 Red Glenn Rooney ( broken ankle ), #8 Blue, Ian Bichon, ( torn stomach muscles), # 14 Teal David Soluk ( shoulder injury), and # 14 Blue, Pat Clarke (groin injury).
Overall, I think we had a good year, and although there was a 19 point difference at the end of the year between first and last, there were very few blowouts. A major contributor to some teams lack of success, was attendance. However, I don’t know if any other division had as much drama as the Orange Division. The Division winner was decided on the last day of the schedule. The Round Robin finalists was decided in the last minute of the last game. And the Round Robin winner was decided in Overtime. So at the end of it all, the prizes were spread out very nicely with Teal winning what some would believe to be the best prize, and that’s the Horse Race which is $192 and usually gets thrown into the year end Team Party. Congratulations to Teal.
I would like to thank once again the outstanding job that our Captains did this year. Jeannot Morin ( White), Barry Walsh ( Red ) Brad Howe ( Blue), Rob Field ( Green ), Mike Motz (Teal), and John Rivard, ( Black). There were some definite challenges to each and every Captain and they all reacted responsibly in dealing with these challenges, and I thank them for that.
Moving forward, I would like to remind all about registration and the ” drop dead” date of May 1st, which is quickly approaching. We will be having our ” inter divisional draft ” ( player movement), approximately the first week of June, followed by team drafts for next year, around the end of June, and teams should be posted by July 15th.
One other date that I would like you to keep in mind is Monday May 26th, 7:00 pm at the Club, which is our Annual General Meeting ( AGM ), and we would like as many as possible to attend. This meeting summarizes the state of the BOHC, for the past year, and keeps everyone up to date what lies ahead for the membership. There is also voting that will take place electing new Board of Directors, so it is requested that, if possible, you attend.
If anybody has any questions, inquiries, please feel free to contact me either by e-mail, or calling me at home.
That’s it for now guys, have a safe, enjoyable summer, and we’ll start this up again in September.
