Mid Season Update

Posted February 07 2010 by Green Convenor

Here we are 32 games into the Season and everyone, other than Gold, is trying to figure how Stevie Hunt has got his Band of Gold playing so well together.  Is it the new Gold sweaters or is Steve the second coming of the legendary Dave Whyte? Is Gold for real or will we see them come back to the pack in true Oldtimer fashion?

I think that for the most part the balancing we did in November has served its purpose and that any one can win on any given night, albeit, some are winning more nights than others. A special thanks to all those players who were part of the balancing draft and took their new assignments in the spirit of Oldtimers hockey. In fact I’m told that when Mr. Mclean and Mr. Ireland reported to Red after the draft they were greeted with a batch of freshly baked cookies courtesy of Brad Gould’s mom.  Talk about the perks of being traded. Notwithstanding the balancing or the outcome of any given game I’m hearing the dressing rooms are all pretty good and that the score is a fleeting memory after a couple of minutes.

While we had a flurry of player movement at the outset of the season with injury and time commitment issues things have quieted down.  Other than the draft the only recent player movement has been Jeff Chapman’s (Chappy’s) decision to move into the pool due to continuing problems with his shoulder.  Jeff was replaced by Bob Armstrong who has been around almost as long as Ross Tuck and Bert Lavigne.  On other news from the infirmary both Ross Tuck and Keith Mason are taking a few weeks off to heal some wounds and Bert Hesselink continues to work on his recovery from last years angioplasty.  We wish them along with “Chappy” a speedy recovery.  On a positive note it is good to see Mario Toupin, Dave Rankin and Mark Pulcine back in playing form.

As a reminder, we have the 34th Annual Invitation Tournament coming up on February 24th – 28th.  This is the premier fund raising event for BOHC and the sale of the raffle tickets goes a long way to shoring up the leagues finances and keeping our annual fees in check while at the same time allowing BOHC to provide ongoing support to the Carpenter Hospice.  If you think you can sell a few tickets more I encourage you to go for it.  And remember that if any Division sells a total of sixty books of tickets (an average of 10 books per team) the Division will receive a complimentary Pub Night.  The League is also looking for contributions for the prize table.  If you have access to any prizes and can help out, please drop them off at the Hector’s.

See you at the rink.
