A new season is only days away and it is important to keep in mind that winning is secondary; the purpose of Old-timers hockey is to provide recreation and enjoyment for its members.
In preparation for the start of the season on Oct 2nd, please keep in mind the following:
1. You should get your hockey gear out of the garage and check to make sure that everything still fits and that none of your equipment has expired or gone missing over the summer. One new rule change this year is that players are not allowed to play with ripped pants. If your hockey pants are ripped, you need to tape over the rip, repair the rip or replace the pants.
2. The referee’s have been instructed to clamp down on profanity. Foul and profane language will not be tolerated on the ice, on the bench or in the penalty box. Penalties can be and will be assessed to players violating this league rule.
3. Your captains will be approaching you to purchase or sell Ham and Turkey tickets. This is the leagues second largest fund raiser with the proceeds going towards helping to reduce your membership fees and support for local charities. Your support of this event is always appreciated.
4. As a division we want all of our teams to be competitive and as such, the first 10 games of the season will used to evaluate team play. If any changes are deemed necessary moves will be made to restore the competitive balance within the Division. These changes will be completed by November 15, 2011.
5. Good news, Blue Division teams will not play any more games at Skyway. All previously scheduled games for Skyway have been switched to Mainway or Appleby arenas.
I would like to thank all of our captains for volunteering their time and efforts to make the Blue Division one of the best Division’s in the BOHC. This year we have two returning captains Hans Hodge and Don VanAlsytne and four new captains, Jim Drysdale, Glenn Miller, Sandro Cervoni and Geoff Mann. Good luck to all and let’s hope that the veteran captains do not take unfair advantage of their new brethren. .
Finally, I would like to welcome back Gunther Kaschuba as our pool convenor. Captains are reminded to try and give Gunther as much lead time as possible to get replacement players from the pool. Also, I would like to introduce our new assistant convenor, Cliff Watling. Cliff has been in the league for a number of years and will have time to watch some of your games as he is still recovering from an injury suffered in the year end tournament last year.
Good Luck to all teams
Richard Ward
